Congratulations! If you have clicked on this tab, you are one step closer to obtaining one of the potentially most impacting things you can do for your body. In my professional opinion there is nothing better you can do to impact your strength, stability, balance, and your posture… Yes posture! One of the most profound things I’ve ever learned is that god put the muscles on the bottom of the feet (plantar muscles) in control of all our postural muscles. This means all the muscles on the back half of our body are activated when our feet are balanced and we therefore have the greatest hope of not ending up terribly hunched over when we are older. Good posture improves the balance of both halves our bodies and therefore both halves of our nervous system. A balanced nervous system is a potentially healthier person.
Structurally speaking, when a person either has supinated feet (weight on outside of feet) or pronated feet (weight on inside of feet), there are changes first to the ankles, knees, hips, then the pelvis. This can proceed upward even to your TMJ’s! Then the end result is an anterior or forward tilt to the pelvis which places notable stress on the L-5 disc. To backtrack a bit, there are three arches in the foot; one on the outside, one in the middle, and then the one everyone is familiar with, the one on the inside. When the first two fall, meaning the outside and the middle, this results in supination or feet that have the weight on the outside and therefore the wear pattern on their shoes is on the outside and so is the stress on their knees. Contrary, when the final stage of collapse has occurred when all three arches fall, this is called pronation and the wear pattern is on the outer corners of the heels because the patient is walking similar to a penguin with their toes out… and the pressure turns to the inner knees.
Some signs and symptoms that your feet may be affecting you are: foot pains
including plantar fasciitis, bunions, heel spurs, curved toes, bone and
joint pains, outer and inner knee pains, meniscus issues, patella (kneecap)
tracking issues, hip joint pains, low back pains, sciatica, rounded shoulders,
forward head tilt, and possible TMJ issues!
So after considering all the facts and if you are suffering from ongoing
issues involving any of the aforementioned signs and symptoms, I highly
recommend you get your own set of custom orthotics. The company I work
with, Foot Levelers, has been in business since 1952 and are experts
and specialists at addressing feet, but have custom pillows as well.
I own one of their laser scanners to assure my patients they are getting
a perfectly fitted pair of orthotics for each foot. I have used Foot
Levelers since 1986 and am extremely pleased as not only do they have
a one year warranty but in times of question, they have always favored
the patient and or myself. They have a variety of choices to suit your
lifestyle and shoe choices. They also offer shoes and sandals with
the custom orthotics built in. Regardless, all of these options will
be discussed with you, so join literally the hundreds of satisfied
patients before you who have made this choice for themselves! We look
forward to having you set your appointment or answering any questions
you may have but remember, there is no single greater thing you can
do to impact your strength, stability, balance, and posture!
Best regards,
Dr. Schroter
